Weekly Photo Challenge : Culture – A Bit of Chinese Culture in Indonesia/ Sedikit Budaya Cina di Indonesia

Chinese culture has also been integral part of Indonesian culture since centuries ago. We have interacted even influenced each other as our proximity. Chinese influences can be seen anywhere, including in Indonesia. Even though during New Order era (1966-1998), Chinese culture had been under pressure, nowadays it is in its renaissance though with Indonesian flavour.

Wayang Potehi or Potehi puppet show has existed in Indonesia for centuries brought by Chinese immigrants. It is only performed in special occasions and tells about legends. Even though it is originated from China, but all players now are local Indonesians, and its language is mixture between Bahasa Indonesia, Javanese and Chinese which makes it unique blend. For this challenge, I give special case….two!!!

    Hi Bambang thanks again for posting something fascinating about Indonesia. I have never seen the Chinese-Indonesian wayang. I have friends who are very interested in this type of culture and art and will pass your blog info to them.

    1. Thank you for your attention. Yes, after more than 30 years pressures, finally Chinese culture has grown up again here, and once more with Indonesian taste. I’ve seen this kind of wayang three times and all in Semarang. Though the groups are existed in several parts of Indonesia as well.
      I hope my blog will be suitable for all. ๐Ÿ™‚
